THE TECHNOLOGY LOVE TRIANGLE WITH IN THE TRIANGLE: THE UPCOMING SUITOR- MOBILE TV
The heading “The Upcoming Suitor” is not very appropriate. Mobile TV is competitor of the TV set in vying for the eyes of viewer. We have to look in bit broader context. It’s not the TV set but the eyes of viewer, whom every technology, we had discussed till now were contending to reach the eyes of viewer. Mobile TV is term used for display devices as well as distribution technology of content. This is the technology which is still in the state of evolution on both delivery and display front.
Term Mobile TV is generally used for the display of content on the mobile devices, such as Mobile Phone, Personal Digital Assistant etc. These devices have a display screen on which live or downloaded video can be played. We will discuss about the issues involved, including development and acceptability, with these devices. In present article we will discuss on the mediums to reach these devices.
Content could be delivered to the mobile devices using three ways:
- DVB-H and other associated standards based on Terrestrial Transmission network.
- Using 3G network
- DVB-SH and other standards for Transmission based on Satellite Network.
Transmission on Terrestrial Transmitter’s Network
We will not be going into the nitty gritty of the technology standards. Digital Video Broadcast – Handheld standards were developed to utilize the pre existing terrestrial transmission network, with some addition and development. The technology of DVB-H has evolved in conjugation to terrestrial Transmission technology. The content is compressed and sent along with the normal terrestrial broadcast. The content is received at the Mobile sets that are DVB-H enabled.
Transmission on 3G Telecom Network
The 3G network based mobile TV uses the fast growing 3G implementation across the world. Mobile TV in these cases is projected as Value Added Services of the Telecom sector. The content is distributed over high speed telecom network to Mobile phones for viewing. The content can be downloaded and also viewed on live stream. In this the content is viewed as web browsing based on GPRS on the mobile phone, the difference is in the networks delivery speed from GPRS and the compression of the content from the DVB-H model.
Transmission through Satellite Distribution
DVB-SH or Digital Video Broadcast- Satellite for Hand held uses the satellite distribution for delivery of content. The Band used is S Band. S Band has been in new recently in India for wrong reason, The S Band spectrum scam. We will discuss that in later article; in short the scam was due to high commercial potentiality of Mobile TV. The content in the case of Mobile TV is send on to satellite for Broadcast as in case of Satellite distribution. The telecast is to the Mobile hand set. The frequency band is low and unique compared to normally available Transponder services on the satellite. The requirement will be then to have a specialized transponder or a satellite with those transponders. There has to be three infrastructures available in DVB-SH case the Operator uplink station, Satellite and appropriate Mobile phone to receive the kind of the signals.
All the three ways of delivering content to Mobile set are all together different and require different kind of reception system. These technologies are in conflict with each other. The conflicts of technologies are generally settled down in the distribution side, due to technological standardization, by technology standard bodies. But, there is still lot of squabbling going on in Mobile TV enabled hand set manufacturers. This technology fight is another long story. In short the delivery standards are ready but the reception standards and equipments are not.
